December has a way of sneaking up on people. Between holiday planning, travel, and end-of-year work deadlines, tax strategy tends to fall to the bottom of the list. That's unfortunate, because December 31st is a hard deadline for most of the moves that actually reduce what you owe.

By the time April rolls around and you're actually filing, the window has closed. Whether you buy & sell crypto on the fomo app or manage a traditional portfolio, here are seven moves worth making before the year runs out.

1. Harvest Your Losses

Tax-loss harvesting is the single most important year-end move for most investors. The concept is straightforward: sell assets that have declined below what you paid for them, locking in the capital loss, then use that loss to offset capital gains elsewhere in your portfolio.

The deadline is firm. December 31st is the tax cutoff to claim these losses for the current tax year. Miss it, and you lose the opportunity entirely for that year's return.

2. Understand the Crypto Advantage

Here's where crypto investors have a genuine structural edge. In traditional markets, the IRS wash sale rule prevents you from claiming a deduction if you repurchase the same security within 30 days of selling at a loss.

As of late 2025, this rule still doesn't explicitly apply to cryptocurrencies in the United States. That means crypto investors can sell at a loss and immediately repurchase the same asset, capturing the tax benefit without losing market exposure. This is a meaningful advantage, though it's worth watching since regulators have signaled interest in closing the gap.

3. Offset Across Asset Classes

One thing many investors overlook is that losses in one type of asset can offset gains in another. If your crypto lost money but your stocks did well (or the reverse), you may be able to use those losses to reduce your tax bill.

This is especially useful in years when crypto and stocks move in different directions. Advisers increasingly treat crypto tax-loss harvesting as part of an overall tax strategy, not just a one-off trade. So if your stocks gained while your crypto lost, that mismatch is worth looking into.

4. Use Excess Losses Against Ordinary Income

If your realized losses exceed your capital gains for the year, the excess doesn't disappear. You can apply up to $3,000 of net capital losses against ordinary income annually, with anything beyond that carried forward to future tax years indefinitely.

This is a genuinely useful provision that many investors overlook. Even in a year with no gains to offset, harvesting losses still delivers a benefit relative to your regular income and builds a carry-forward balance for future years.

5. Mind Your Holding Periods

The distinction between short-term and long-term capital gains is significant. Assets held more than 12 months qualify for long-term rates of 0%, 15%, or 20%, depending on income. Short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income at rates up to 37%.

If you're approaching the one-year mark on a winning position, waiting a few extra weeks before selling can meaningfully reduce your tax bill. Check your acquisition dates before executing any year-end sales.

6. Choose Your Cost Basis Method Deliberately

Most investors default to whatever their platform uses, which is usually first-in-first-out. But specific identification methods let you select which lots you're selling.

This gives you control over how much gain or loss you realize on any given transaction. Where the method is available and properly documented, it can substantially reduce your taxable gains. The key is to maintain clean records that support whichever method you use.

7. Get Your Records in Order

This is the unglamorous move that makes every other move possible. Tax reporting requirements for digital assets have tightened, and reporting standards continue to evolve.

Clean transaction data ensures you don't overpay, which many investors do simply because their records are incomplete. Reconciling wallets, exchanges, and brokerage accounts before year-end gives you an accurate picture of your gains and losses, which is the foundation for every strategic decision you make.

A Note on Timing and Volatility

Year-end selling pressure is a real market phenomenon. Coordinated tax-motivated selling in December, combined with institutional portfolio adjustments and thin holiday liquidity, can amplify price declines. That's also part of why January sometimes brings rebounds.

Understanding this dynamic helps you time your moves thoughtfully rather than reacting to price action that has more to do with tax calendars than fundamentals.

Plan Before December, Not in April

The recurring theme across all of these strategies is timing. By filing season, most tax-saving opportunities have already expired. The investors who consistently reduce their tax burden are the ones who treat November and December as planning months rather than waiting until spring.

Tax rules vary by situation and jurisdiction, and this is general information rather than personalized advice. Consulting a tax professional familiar with your specific circumstances, especially if your activity spans multiple asset classes or countries, is always the smart move before executing any significant year-end strategy.
