Filing a car accident claim may be confusing and overwhelming, especially when you’re dealing with your injuries from the crash, your vehicle damage, and the aftermath of the accident itself.

Although Progressive is renowned for its customer service and claims process, there are several pitfalls to avoid when making a claim that could slow the process down or even stop it completely. Knowing what NOT to do during this time can help your claim process be as smooth and quick as it is meant to be. Below are mistakes you should avoid when filing a car accident claim.

Not Reporting the Accident Promptly

One of the greatest mistakes you could commit when trying to deal with a Progressive car accident claim is failing to report the accident right away. Most auto insurance plans, including Progressive’s, mandate that you notify your insurance company of an accident as soon as reasonably possible after it happens.

If you don’t report the accident immediately, this can be a red flag that could draw scrutiny from insurance companies and lead to your claim being denied. Depending on the jurisdiction and your specific case, waiting too long to report an accident can complicate obtaining necessary evidence or witness testimony in favor of your case.

In order to avoid these issues, ensure that you report the accident to Progressive promptly, even if it seems as though there’s no significant damage initially.

Not Documenting the Scene Properly

Documentation is essential when it comes to making an auto insurance claim. You don’t want to get into a case where you haven’t documented the accident scene thoroughly, leaving it all up to what you remember.

The photographic evidence, the statements of witnesses, and other specifics of the accident are important in supporting your claim. This involves photographing damage to the vehicle, the accident scene, traffic lights, roadway conditions, and any visible injuries. It can also be invaluable to write down the contact information for everyone involved, including witnesses.

Admitting Fault or Making Concessions

It’s human nature to feel guilty or the need to apologize after an accident, but saying it was your fault or making concessions can harm your claim. Even if you believe the accident was partially your fault, steer clear of stating so at the scene of the crash or when speaking with an insurance adjuster. The fault in a car accident can be based on several factors, and an admission of guilt too soon may reduce your chances of getting the due compensation, particularly in situations where legal complications arise and guidance related to matters such as DUI defense becomes relevant.

Statements such as “I’m sorry” or “It’s my fault” may be seen as acknowledging liability, which can muddy the claims process. Stick to the facts and let the insurance adjusters and police determine who is at fault.

Accepting The Initial Settlement Offer

It is not uncommon for insurance companies to make an initial settlement offer following a car crash. However, jumping at the opportunity to settle when you have been so recently injured may leave you feeling shortchanged. Progressive, like most insurance carriers, may provide a fast settlement to resolve the case as soon as possible.

Take Away

Car accident claims with Progressive don’t need to be intimidating. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Report the accident promptly so your claim gets off to the right start.
  • Archive the scene in detail so you have solid proof to back up your account.
  • Do not admit fault before you have reviewed all the facts.
  • Thoroughly evaluate all damage and injury claims to avoid problems or underpayments.
  • Maintain written records of all costs associated with the accident in order to be reimbursed properly.

If you act fast and stay organized, you can navigate the claims process more confidently and increase your odds of getting paid.
