The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has spent years building one of the most digitally advanced economies in the world.

Investing in technology and artificial intelligence (AI) is a key part of the nation’s long-term plans to diversify its revenue streams.

The UAE wants to build a cashless society where people and businesses rely on digital payment methods such as bank cards, mobile wallets and online transfers.

The government plans to ensure at least 90 percent of all payments in the country are made digitally by 2026. This could add more than $2.17 billion to the economy every year.

The plan to go digital has been in the pipeline for a couple of years. Nearly all government services could be accessed digitally in 2024.

That means residents and businesses could pay their taxes, renew licences and apply for permits online without visiting a government office.

The UAE is looking to build on the foundation that’s already been established and make sure digital payment methods are enforced across the country.

Read on as we look at four payment trends that could shape the UAE’s future.

Smarter Payments Powered by AI

AI technology already helps people with simple tasks such shopping, but it can do so much more.

That includes comparing prices across different stores, recommending products based on what you have bought before, keeping an eye out for discounts and even placing an order for everyday items if you have given it permission to do so.

This could make shopping much easier, especially for busy people and businesses. Instead of remembering to buy household essentials or office supplies, AI could automatically reorder them when they are running low.

The biggest downside to giving AI that much access is the potential for security risks. If AI is making purchases on your behalf, payment companies need to be sure that it is really your authorised AI assistant and not a cybercriminal trying to access your account.

To reduce the risk of being hacked, technology companies have started developing stronger security measures to verify every transaction.

A Newly Regulated Gambling Sector Creates Fresh Opportunities for Digital Payment Providers

The UAE’s decision to legalise gambling could help improve its digital payment systems.

With a regulated gambling system in place, licensed operators will be required to use secure and reliable payment methods that are approved by the government.

That will create new business opportunities for companies that provide digital payment services such as banks, fintech firms and digital wallet providers.

Unlike other industries, regulated gambling relies almost entirely on digital transactions.

People expect to be able to deposit and withdraw money quickly and safely, while operators must make sure every transaction is secure and complies with laws designed to prevent crime.

Punters who compare betting operators using resources such as the Haztayeb UAE casino comparison platform favour those that offer faster transactions and better security.

The sector could also push companies to develop safer payment systems.

Features such as spending controls, transaction monitoring, identity verification and real-time compliance reporting can help to establish a safer gambling environment while strengthening trust in licensed operators.

Digital Identity and Security Become the Foundation of Payments

While digital transactions generally make life easier for everyone, there’s always the risk of compromising the identities of the customers.

As they become more common, criminals find new ways to steal personal and financial information.

That means using regular passwords is no longer enough to keep accounts secure. To address the situation, the UAE has started introducing more nuanced ways for people to verify their identity.

Instead of repeatedly entering passwords or filling out long verification forms, customers can use fingerprint scans, facial recognition or government-approved digital identities.

These tools make it faster and easier to access financial services, verify identity and complete important transactions, while also making it much harder for someone else to impersonate a customer.

Implementing these measures wouldn’t be difficult, as residents are already familiar with online government services. That makes it easy for banks, payment providers, retailers and fintech companies to use the same systems.

Digital Assets and New Forms of Money Enter Everyday Finance

Cryptocurrency previously attracted attention solely from investors, but it has gradually become useful for everyday payments in the UAE.

With the government introducing clearer rules for digital assets, 2026 is expected to bring more practical payment applications.

These regulations have given banks and financial companies more confidence to work with crypto businesses, paving the way for new partnerships and payment services.

Stablecoins are particularly attracting plenty of attention. People lean more towards them because they’re designed to maintain their value despite market volatility, unlike Bitcoin, which is easily affected by large price swings.

Because they are more stable, stablecoins have the potential to make international payments quicker, cheaper, and more reliable.

The UAE’s Digital Dirham project is also expected to become more mainstream in 2026. It’s a digital version of the country’s official currency that’s being developed by the central bank.
