Why Seniors Are Turning to Medical Cannabis for Wellness

Many scientific studies have linked the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. A ScienceDirect study shows that the discovery of cannabinoid receptors like CB1 and CB2 has helped us understand how cannabis works. This has proved significant in determining new medicinal benefits of cannabis, including the treatment of chronic pain and neurodegenerative diseases.

In recent years, medical cannabis has become a growing topic of interest among seniors. As an article from The New York Times notes, a growing number of seniors are now turning to pot over pills. Some elderly have been using them for over a decade now, but many are turning to cannabis for the first time. Only 0.4% of Americans aged above 65 used it in 2007. However, the number rose to 3% by 2017 and 8% by 2021.

One of the primary reasons behind this growth is that senior citizens are seeking alternative ways to address their health concerns. Once regarded with skepticism, cannabis is now gaining recognition for its therapeutic benefits. Since many older adults have at least some form of health problems, cannabis is becoming a source of relief from chronic conditions.

Addressing Chronic Pain Without Opioids

Many senior citizens are prescribed opioids for managing chronic pain. According to data, around 12.8% of adults aged above 65 filed for at least one opioid prescription in 2020-2021. Around 4.4% had four prescription fills during the same year. While opioids can be effective, they also pose the dangers of drug overdose.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that more than 106,000 Americans died in 2021 due to drug overdose. Three in four of these deaths involved an opioid.

Conditions like arthritis, back pain, and neuropathy are often associated with aging. Many seniors are now exploring medical cannabis as a safer alternative to these opioids.

Research suggests that certain compounds in cannabis can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. For some, this shift has led to reduced dependency on prescription medications and a greater sense of control over their health.

How does medical cannabis compare to over-the-counter pain relievers?

Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually associated with numerous side effects. For instance, opioids are known for their addictive nature and can cause overdose, leading to deaths in some instances. Medical cannabis focuses on addressing pain by targeting inflammation and nerve receptors.

Promoting Better Sleep and Relaxation

Disorders like insomnia are very common among older adults, as people tend to lose sleep as they age. This can lead to numerous other health conditions, such as memory issues and cardiovascular conditions. To overcome this issue, many individuals rely on medical cannabis, especially tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), to go to sleep.

THCA is the non-psychoactive compound of cannabis. Therefore, it offers you health benefits without the dangers of getting high, which is associated with THC. Thus, they become an ideal option to get good sleep without disrupting mental clarity.

A national poll found that around 68% of older adults cited using medical cannabis to get a good night’s sleep. Strains rich in CBD, known for its calming effects, are particularly popular among those who wish to avoid the intoxicating effects of THC. The improved sleep quality can enhance overall well-being and energy levels, making daily life more manageable.

However, it is important to use only the best quality cannabis products for medicinal use. This is especially important considering that poor-quality products can cause various health problems.

Consider the example of the story of an 82-year-old dementia patient. According to The Washington Post, the patient had repeatedly visited the emergency room for abdominal pain and vomiting. It was found that he was using two hits of Burmese Kush, a cannabis strain, to fall asleep.

To avoid such situations, you should only use the best medicinal products. Fortunately, it is possible to find the best Cannabis products and accessories here.

Are there specific types of cannabis products best for sleep?

Sleep-promoting products include CBD tinctures, sweets containing THC, and hybrid strains. However, any CBD products can be used to induce sleep unless they contain harmful substances. The decision to select a product completely depends on your personal needs, tolerance, and preferences.

Managing Anxiety and Depression

Emotional difficulties, including worry, sadness, and loneliness, are a part of aging. The mental health of the elderly can be significantly impacted by all of these connected issues. An NCBI study states that loneliness can cause numerous psychiatric disorders, such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Sleep problems, etc.

Medical cannabis is increasingly being used to support emotional wellness in seniors. By interacting with mood regulators, CBD and low doses of THC can help reduce feelings of anxiety and improve emotional balance. Cannabis products usually have fewer adverse effects than some conventional treatments for mental health. They appeal to people who like a softer approach because of this.

Can cannabis replace traditional antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications?

Cannabis cannot replace traditional antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications. Although you can help alleviate symptoms in many individuals, you cannot use it as a direct replacement for antidepressants. It is important that you consult with your healthcare provider before introducing cannabis as a part of your medical routine.

A Shift in Perception

One of the most significant factors driving the increased use of medical cannabis among seniors is a cultural shift in how it is perceived. Decades of stigma are gradually fading as more research highlights its medicinal value.

Another major reason is the improving regulations around the manufacturing and use of cannabis. CDC reports that 47 US states allowed medicinal use of this plant as of February 2024. Moreover, the District of Columbia and three territories also allow the same.

Therefore, seniors who once viewed cannabis skeptically are now more open to trying it. They are even being encouraged by their peers or family members. The availability of products specifically tailored to their needs, such as tinctures, creams, and gummies, also makes cannabis more accessible and less intimidating.

The need for natural and efficient health solutions is predicted to increase as the senior population continues to expand. A lot of the mental and physical problems that come with growing older may be resolved with medical cannabis.

Cannabis presents a fresh option for people looking for pain treatment, better sleep, and increased well-being. It is an option that fits with the goal of living a more balanced and satisfying life.
