The rivalry matches of football and basketball between teams with a rich history have always been an integral part of the sporting life of the Balkans. What is different now from just a few years ago is who has become a fan of these matches. Fans no longer include only citizens of the city or country where these matches are played, but also the diasporas from other continents. Through the development of streaming channels, transcontinental leagues, and the worldwide popularity of ultras fan culture, local derby matches have turned into a global event.

The Map of Major Balkan Derbies

Derbies, seen around the world, have their origins in long-standing local rivalries. Incidentally, you can watch live streams of the matches on the 1xBet Serbia website or through their official app. In each case, the game involves two teams from the same city or country, and these rivalries go back many years, with established names woven into the fan culture of each side.

Several of these derbies have historically been part of the most heated football derbies on the continent, according to the media that covers football in Europe. Of all the derbies mentioned, the Belgrade Eternal Derby and the Athens Derby of the Eternal Enemies have received the most attention worldwide. There are also several slot machines that can be found in the 1xcasino list and which are equally popular. Such games are very easy to start playing directly from your phone during breaks in between matches.

What Is Driving the Wider Reach

These three factors complement each other: video streaming, rivalry at the regional level, and fan-produced graphics. Video streaming and clipping are the key to this transformation. Now, regional channels such as Arena Sport, SportKlub, and Nova Sport are able to air live streams of entire matches.

The third component of the equation is the content of the clips. These clips are made up of one or several of the following components:

  • Marches from the city center to the stadium with thousands of supporters.
  • Post-match player and coach interviews carry high emotional content.
  • Slow-motion fan-camera edits set to local or international music.
  • Long-form documentaries produced by both clubs and independent media.

This change means that national broadcast television is no longer the only route through which derby matches reach wider audiences. In the past, TV coverage was the main way for a rivalry to travel beyond its city or country. Now social media is flooded with videos of tifo displays, fan chants, and matchday atmosphere, all actively shared on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

The second factor is the nature of the competition. The ABA League was founded in 2001 and became the leading regional basketball tournament for clubs from the former Yugoslav space. Over the past few years, the league has changed its structure. In the 2024/25 season, Dubai Basketball joined the competition, increasing the number of clubs from 14 to 16. For the 2025/26 season, the league moved to an 18-team format. Its core remains Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Slovenia, and North Macedonia, while Dubai is the major non-regional participant.

Matches such as Partizan vs. Cibona and Crvena Zvezda vs. Cedevita Olimpija carry a derby-like intensity and are strong examples of cross-border rivalry in regional basketball. In basketball, the ABA League has often become more visible than individual domestic leagues. Football still mostly keeps its rivalries within national competitions, while cross-border tension appears mainly through UEFA qualifying rounds and European club tournaments.

Practical Effects on Clubs and Cities

Audience growth has produced measurable changes for the clubs and host cities. The five most visible:

  • The travel industry has packaged tickets to games centered around derby matches as a way of attracting foreign supporters.
  • Talented youngsters make themselves visible to European scouts much faster due to the increased coverage of their performances.
  • The sponsorship aspect of European football has developed beyond local firms to become a game for pan-European firms seeking international exposure through these matches.
  • Football derbies have become so popular that even security operations have been boosted in order to cater to both the crowds and social media postings.
  • Hoteliers and transport providers experience increased demand for accommodation and flights, respectively, during the derby weekend.

It’s a varied impact. Belgrade and Athens undoubtedly dominate in the uppermost rows of the audience hierarchy, while Zagreb and Sofia lie second from the top. However, football games in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and North Macedonia take place in a similar infrastructure environment, albeit at a lower level.

Balkan regional derby matches have now become a part of the bigger picture of the European sports content market, and the factors that contributed to that change – diaspora outreach, pan-region rivalry, and online broadcasting – have a more structural than cyclical nature.
